Creating enticing bed, bedding and sofa images for Sleep.8

Sleep.8 and Profile PR commissioned me to take these images to advertise their new bed range across billboards and social media.

The brief was to create visuals that would be showcased across billboards and social media and we had our challenges as the shots were to be taken in-store. We aimed to convey the comfort, luxury, and sophistication of their beds, ensuring that the images would reflect both the comfort of beds and the relaxed fun of the brand. There is a little section below about how to work with models as a photographer as well as this model - Shauna specifically!

Faking window light

I saw these large faux window panes being used as dividers in the store we were shooting in and thought they might work to create some fake sunlight filtering onto the bed. It worked really well by using a bare bulb flash and with some adjusting adding some gels and plants behind it but in front of the lighting it created a really convincing sunny day, despite the fact it was in shopping centre in East London!

Working with models

You may recognise Shauna the female model who is pictured in a lot of these images. I’ve worked with Shauna a lot and as much as I’d like it to be this isn’t by design. She’s just amazing at what she does and has a very commercial look that seems to be picked up by a lot of different brands and agencies. Anyway if you do recognise her then it’s most likely because she was Wella’s go to girl for a number of years given her amazing hair. Similarly, headmasters used her a number of campaigns.

I always find working with models a really freeing experience. Coming from a background of products and then laterally shooting a lot of weddings; working with models is brilliant creatively. It adds another dynamic that is often hard to achieve with, well, not models. Lighting is a lot more forgiving on models which frees you up to be a little more creative with posing and capturing emotion rather than just perfect formulaic imagery as in product photography
